For the biome projects in science, your student was assigned a biome to research. The coloring pages were given to get them started. They can complete the project in any format (shoebox, poster, etc.) BUT it is also okay for them to turn in just the coloring pages and written report. They will present their biome to the class next week. Projects are due back to school on Tuesday.
I had a parent question about the math homework. Any time your child is having trouble with the homework, they may bring it back to school with questions. This is the perfect way to start our "math talks!" Problem solving can be done in many different ways. I love to see how many ways we can get to a solution. Talking through it is the best way to gain a deep understanding in math!

Today is the beginning of week five. I can hardly believe it!
This week in math we are reading, writing, and comparing numbers from the millions place to the thousandths place. Students will need to be able to reading really big numbers and write them using standard form, word form, and expanded form. (8,432,715.916; eight million, four hundred thirty-two thousand, seven hundred fifteen and nine hundred sixteen thousandths; 8,000,000 + 400,000 + 30,000 + 2,000 + 700 + 10 + 5 + .9 + .01 + .006) We will also review powers of ten and exponential notation. 10 x 10 x 10 = 103 Except the three should be at the top of the 10. I'm not sure how to do that in the website format. In science we will study ecosystems and biomes. I have had another great question from a parent concerning the pretests. I DO pretest every math skill prior to teaching. This is so I can see which direction I need to go as a class. If students already know the material, I don't want to waste precious time re-teaching. These grades do NOT go in the grade book, but the students keep a graph in their math journals so they can see how much they have learned when the post test is given AFTER instruction. Please let me know if you have further questions about this matter.
Thank you for the question, Destinee! Students may work on ELA or Math as long as they are working on a 5th grade level. They are not limited to the skills we are working on in class.
IXL CHALLENGE
Dr. Barnes has provided all grade levels with access to the IXL website at Blythe-Bower this year. IXL is a comprehensive math and language arts review site with an unlimited number of practice questions in thousands of skills-all of which are aligned to state standards. Students in grades 3 - 5 are invited to work in one of our computer labs each morning between 7:40 and 8:15. Students and classes with the highest number of questions answered correctly will be recognized. Just click on the link to go to the IXL website: www.ixl.com This week in math we will continue our work with exponents and reading, writing, and comparing numbers to the millions and thousandths. In science we will finish creating our book on animal classification and begin working on ecosystems and biomes. Tonight at 6:00 p.m. is 5th grade parent night. Mrs. Johnson's and Mrs. Durham's homerooms will be meeting in Mrs. Durham's classroom. Any student who has a parent come to Mrs. Durham/Mrs. Johnson's parent night will be awarded extra Dojo points.
Week 2 was a success! Now, on to week three! Can't believe the third week of school is already here!
Today we will be doing our beginning of the year testing for oral reading fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and math. Most of these tests will be completed in the computer lab. Tuesday - Thursday we will be working on animal classification in science, and in math we will begin our study of exponents. We will also continue to review our first standard which is understanding that the digit to the left is ten times more and the digit to the right is 1/10 of the place to the left. This is true for whole numbers and decimals. We will also begin our math fact fluency timed tests. Have a happy week! Hakhuna Matata! I was mistaken about our special schedule for art week. We will miss music this nine weeks. That means will WILL HAVE Gym on Friday.
This is art week, so we will only have gym on Monday.
In math we will be reviewing place value to the millions and adding the decimal side to millionTHS. We will be learning the Place Value Rap. By the end of the week, students should be able to read numbers that have six digits on either side of the decimal. In science we will review the differences in plant and animal cells, identify several organelles, and identify the organelle that performs photosynthesis. On Friday, we will have another team-building group challenge. Can't wait to see my students!!!!! Oh. My. Goodness! I have had so much fun this week. Today we did our first STEM challenge. 16 cups, one rubber band, and one foot of string per person on each team. Check out the pictures under the PICS tab.
